In partnership with EducationUSA – a U.S. Department of State Network -, the Language Center and the International Affairs Center (NAI), UniEVANGÉLICA is holding the fifth edition of the Book Club in English in the first semester of 2018.

The proposal is for the students to read a book in English during the semester. Weekly meetings are held to discuss what has been read, in addition to working on new vocabulary and developing reading and comprehension skills. In this edition, students are reading To Kill a Mocking Bird by American writer Harpee Lee, one of the greatest classics in American literature and winner of the 1960 Pulitzer Prize.

The students participating in the project are very fond of the club and feel motivated to advance in their English studies. Lucas Figueiredo, 19, says the book club encourages him to study more. “It’s like an immersion. What I don’t do at home I do here”, said the student who participates for the second time.

Deborah Fleury, 22, said that the book club can help her in the Nursing course she is currently enrolled in at UniEVANGÉLICA. “We have a lot of scientific articles in English and we use a lot of terms in the language too, it’s very important”, she said. Likewise, said Ana Clara Fernandes, 17, who studies Law at the institution. “I think English is one of the most important tools if you want to be a good professional and advance in your career”, she said.

Prof. Luiz Eduardo Krüger Dias, who is in charge of the project, said that the main advantage of the Book Club is a more direct approach of teaching. “We believe that the student should be immersed in a proposal that is very similar to what he or she experiences in daily life”, he said. For him, the model of meetings facilitates learning, as it prioritizes individuality. “Each student has different reading and comprehension rhythms”, he added.

Professor Pollyanna Morais Espíndola Gomides, coordinator of the Language Center, praised the partnership that the project has with EducationUSA and highlights the importance of the Book Club in language learning. “In these meetings there are several discussions based on what is read in the book and they enhance the formation of the student”, she said.

The Book Club is offered every semester at the Language Center and is free and open to all academic and external communities. The only prerequisite is to have an intermediate level in the English language.
